As part of their sacramental preparation for First Communion, our second-graders at Christ the King have been talking about the Eucharist as a shared meal. In this spirit, and to serve as the Body of Christ in their community, they are also sharing food and encouragement with individuals locally who are in need.
As part of their First Communion Retreat service project, our First Communicants have collected nonperishable food items for the Sr. Maureen Joyce Center Soup Kitchen in Albany. Every Sunday, the Center (located on Livingston Avenue) prepares more than 70 packaged takeout meals for distribution to families in need ~ some of whom are homeless. Our second-graders have also created handmade greeting cards to accompany the meals, with cheerful images to bring a smile to people's faces as they pick up their food.
These photos show just a few of the amazing items collected over this past month, along with heartfelt messages written in their cards. Thank you so much to everyone who participated!
